Agnikul Cosmos Successfully Launches Agnibaan SoRTed-01 from Private Launchpad in Sriharikota
Sriharikota, India – In a landmark achievement for India’s private space sector, startup Agnikul Cosmos has successfully launched the Agnibaan SoRTed-01 mission from their dedicated launch pad at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC SHAR) in Sriharikota. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) announced the news on Thursday, marking this event as a major milestone in India’s space exploration endeavors.

ISRO lauded Agnikul Cosmos for their achievement, terming it as a significant step forward. "Congratulations, @AgnikulCosmos, for the successful launch of the Agnibaan SoRTed-01 mission from their launch pad. A major milestone as the first-ever controlled flight of a semi-cryogenic liquid engine realised through additive manufacturing," ISRO posted on X.
Innovative Engine and Avionics
The engine test, driven by Agnikul’s in-house designed data acquisition systems and flight computers, highlights the startup’s technological prowess. This successful launch not only demonstrated the effectiveness of the semi-cryogenic liquid engine but also validated the avionics chain of the SOrTeD vehicle, confirming its ability to control the entire propulsion system.
Agnibaan's Capabilities and Flexibility
Agnibaan, the vehicle used in the SoRTed-01 mission, is capable of carrying payloads up to 300 kg to orbits around 700 km high. It can access both low and high inclination orbits and is highly versatile, designed to operate from more than 10 different launch ports. The vehicle, which runs on LOX/Kerosene engines, can be configured by customers based on their specific mission requirements.
India's Growing Space Sector
This achievement by Agnikul Cosmos is part of a broader surge in India's space sector. In 2023, India celebrated significant milestones including the successful soft landing of Chandrayaan-3 on the Moon’s South Pole and the launch of Aditya-L1, the country’s first solar mission. These accomplishments have not only bolstered India’s position in the global space economy but have also invigorated the private space sector.
Future Ambitions
India’s space ambitions continue to grow, with plans to establish the 'Bharatiya Antariksha Station' by 2035 and send the first Indian to the Moon by 2040. These goals underscore the nation's commitment to advancing its capabilities in space exploration and technology.
