This step comes as part of the BCI's rigorous verification process to ensure that only qualified, genuinely practising advocates remain in the profession, ultimately upholding public trust in the legal system. Strengthened Verification Framework Under Rule 32 This effort falls under Rule 32 of the Bar Council of India Certificate and Place of Practice (Verification) Rules, 2015 . The BCI  amended Rule 32 on June 23, 2023 , which empowered the BCI to verify, identify, and systematically remove unqualified and fake advocates from the Roll. NCP(SP) Leader Jitendra Awhad Faces Legal Action for Posting Fake Video on Manipur Elections

Case Registered Against NCP (SP) Leader Jitendra Awhad

A case has been registered against the Nationalist Congress Party Case (Sharadchandra Pawar) against NCP (SP) leader Jitendra Awhad for posting a fake video; Manipur CEO issues fake news alert (NCP (SP) ) leader Jitendra Awhad for allegedly posting a fake video related to the Manipur elections. The video purported a mismatch between the button pressed in the Ballot Unit and the Paper Slip generated through the Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) in Manipur's Khurai Assembly Segment Polling Station.

Charges Filed by Manipur Police

The Manipur Police has charged Awhad with various offenses under sections 120-B, 203, 505(1)(2), 171-C, 171-E of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), and sections 123 and 136 of the Representation of the People Act. These include criminal conspiracy, providing false information, statements causing public mischief, creating or promoting enmity, and bribery or undue influence at an election.

Allegations of Fake Video

Earlier, Awhad posted a video on social media alleging that women in Manipur broke the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) after noticing that only the lotus symbol (associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party) was being printed regardless of the button pressed. However, the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Manipur clarified that the video depicted a case of mob violence in a polling station and that a re-poll had already been conducted in that location. The CEO emphasized that no mismatch between the button pressed and the VVPAT paper slip had been reported.

Importance of CEO's Clarification

The CEO's clarification highlights the importance of combatting fake news, especially during elections, to maintain the integrity of the electoral process. Spreading misinformation can lead to confusion among voters and undermine trust in the democratic process.

Legal Consequences

The case against Awhad serves as a reminder of the legal consequences of disseminating false information, particularly in sensitive contexts such as elections. Such actions not only violate legal statutes but also jeopardize the fundamental principles of democracy.

Conclusion: Upholding Electoral Integrity

Voting for the 2024 Lok Sabha concluded in Manipur, with 13 Assembly segments in the State's Outer Manipur constituency casting their votes in the second phase of polling on Friday. The incident underscores the need for vigilance and accountability in addressing instances of fake news, particularly in the context of elections, to uphold the democratic values of transparency and fairness.
