Bar Council of India Removes 107 Fake Advocates from  Delhi Roll to Uphold Legal Integrity The Bar Council of India (BCI) has taken decisive action in a sweeping initiative aimed at maintaining the integrity of the legal profession by removing 107 fake advocates  from the Roll of Advocates in Delhi  between 2019 and October 2024. This step comes as part of the BCI's rigorous verification process to ensure that only qualified, genuinely practising advocates remain in the profession, ultimately upholding public trust in the legal system. The Supreme Court has appointed an expert committee to oversee the preservation of the Great Indian Bustard (GIB), emphasizing the need to balance conservation efforts with sustainable development goals, particularly in meeting the country's international commitments toward promoting renewable energy sources.


Supreme Court's Emphasis on GIB Protection


In its order issued on March 21, the Supreme Court highlighted the criticality of protecting the GIB while considering the installation of transmission lines over a vast area spanning 88,000 square kilometers. The court acknowledged the endangered status of the GIB species and the necessity for proactive measures to safeguard it.


Tasking the Expert Committee


The expert committee, comprising members from various wildlife and conservation backgrounds, has been tasked with evaluating the feasibility and extent of overhead and underground electric lines in priority areas identified in Rajasthan and Gujarat. Additionally, the committee will propose conservation and protection measures specific to the GIB and other fauna in desert regions.


Promoting Sustainable Development


Furthermore, the committee will explore sustainable alternatives for laying future power lines to ensure the long-term survival of the GIB while fulfilling India's commitments to renewable energy development. The court's directive also relaxes previous injunctions on potential areas, subject to the parameters established by the expert committee.


Previous Court Orders and Conservation Efforts


This initiative builds upon previous court orders directing authorities to convert overhead cables into underground power lines to mitigate hazards posed to bird species, including the GIB. Overhead power lines have been identified as a significant threat to the survival of the GIB, prompting legal action to address this issue.

Legal Proceedings Initiated Against Former Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren Cognizance Taken by PMLA Court A Special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court in Ranchi has taken cognizance of a prosecution complaint filed by the Directorate of Enforcement (ED) against Hemant Soren, the former Chief Minister of Jharkhand and leader of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM).
