Bar Council of India Removes 107 Fake Advocates from  Delhi Roll to Uphold Legal Integrity The Bar Council of India (BCI) has taken decisive action in a sweeping initiative aimed at maintaining the integrity of the legal profession by removing 107 fake advocates  from the Roll of Advocates in Delhi  between 2019 and October 2024. This step comes as part of the BCI's rigorous verification process to ensure that only qualified, genuinely practising advocates remain in the profession, ultimately upholding public trust in the legal system. Strengthened Verification Framework Under Rule 32 This effort falls under Rule 32 of the Bar Council of India Certificate and Place of Practice (Verification) Rules, 2015 . The BCI  amended Rule 32 on June 23, 2023 , which empowered the BCI to verify, identify, and systematically remove unqualified and fake advocates from the Roll. The rule amendment has made the process of weeding out non-compliant individuals significantly more efficient. Accordi

India Welcomes New Election Commissioners

India Welcomes New Election Commissioners

Introduction:

The Election Commission of India (ECI) welcomed two new Election Commissioners, Gyanesh Kumar and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu, who officially joined the Commission on Friday. Their appointment comes after a selection panel chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi finalized their names on Thursday.

Appointment Process:

The selection committee, comprising the Prime Minister, Law Minister, and Leader of the Opposition, met to consider names for the vacant positions of election commissioners. However, dissent was expressed by Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury regarding the selection process.

Background of Appointees:

Gyanesh Kumar, who retired as the secretary of the cooperation ministry in February, and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu, former Chief Secretary of Uttarakhand, bring with them extensive experience in administration and governance.

Legislative Changes:

The appointment and service terms of Chief Election Commissioners and election commissioners are now regulated by a bill passed by the Rajya Sabha on December 12. This bill replaces the Election Commission (Conditions of Service of Election Commissioners and Transaction of Business) Act, 1991.

Appointment Procedure:

According to the new bill, the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and Election Commissioners (ECs) will be appointed by the President upon the recommendation of a Selection Committee, which includes the Prime Minister, a Union Cabinet Minister, and the Leader of the Opposition or the leader of the largest opposition party in Lok Sabha.

Upcoming Tasks:

The newly appointed Election Commissioners will have the crucial responsibility of ensuring the successful conduct of the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, scheduled to be held in April-May this year.

Conclusion:

The addition of Gyanesh Kumar and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu to the Election Commission strengthens the democratic process in India and underscores the importance of fair and transparent elections in the country's governance.
